Design Associates Inc. in essence is an Architectural Design Firm.
However, from our very inception we have focused on providing client and site specific responsive design solutions and have always aimed to deliver more than just conventional architectural services.
Over the past decade, we have won many competitions and projects in Health Care, Education, Institutional Design, Housing, Office Spaces, Interior Design and Project Management Consultancy and used these as a platform for holistically addressing issues such as Architectural Identity and Vocabulary; quality of Urban and Public spaces and the Environment. Our projects have provided us with an opportunity to understand and use conventional, traditional and contemporary materials & technology most appropriately.All this finds expression in our buildings expressed either boldly or subtly as called for by the nature of the project .
A brief History
Our journey began with a series of early houses, schools and institutional projects in 1998. Our first office in South Extension, Delhi was a 8 feet by 19 feet garage space with a wall fan! The staff comprised of the three principals – Debashish Roy, Sumere Dar and Jay Kaktikar.
It was a gradual progression – The Managing committee of the Maharaja Aggrasen Institute of Technology, (Rohini, Delhi), chaired by Sh. Nand Kishore Garg appointed us as Architects to design their Rohini Campus in Nov 2000. In 2003-04 we were appointed as Architects and Project Management Consultants for University Of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun. We were learning and relearning a lot at that stage. We (including the Directors personally), were involved at every stage of these projects – from the selection of the site to the selection of every material used to the last nut and bolt that went into design & construction.
By 2004, we were 8 people and the garage was too small. We moved to an office in R. K. Puram and stayed there for 4 more years, till our staff was more than 30, and the new office too small once again!
By 2010, we were over 75 people in the Noida Office, 10 in the Lucknow Office, 3 in Mumbai and 3 in Hyderabad. Our network of offices allowed us to understand and resolve issues locally, while our clients retained a single point of contact. We had won the competitions for the Noida and Greater Noida authority buildings and would go on to bag the Golden Temple Entrance Plaza International Competition Award in Amritsar, Punjab in 2011. Needless to say, we, along with our reputation – were growing!
Today...
We are still a young company, full of energy and ideas and enthusiasm. But we are also now an experienced company with over 10 years and more than 20,000 crores worth of projects behind us; wiser and more knowledgeable with every project gone by.
The policy within the office is one that promotes a healthy exchange of ideas and the principals are still personally involved with every project at every stage. We give great importance to architectural detailing, focus on the use of the right material in the right manner, we think of the context, about the ecology, technology, newer materials, newer methods of construction.... Typically, the limitations of a site become assests in designing for it!
We think of everything and then we make it very simple for our clients to understand and chose from. Which is to say, that we ‘think’ of the client.
Our relationship with our clients is responsive and transparent, we are problem-solvers and very clearly focused on the needs of our clients. We deliver projects both on time and within budget.
