Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra

It is proposed to erect a memorial in the form of an equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on a reclaimed island in the Arabian Sea in the Back Bay area. The total height of the proposed memorial will be 210meters from AMSL. Apart from its tremendous visual impact it would also be an engineering landmark. The location of the memorial on a reclaimed island in the Back Bay would allow for high visibility from the Marine Drive, Mumbai’s most prominent seafront. At an Urban scale the memorial complex would be an Urban Marker and a Landmark for the city of Mumbai, for India and for the world at large; but for the individual visitor it will provide an ‘immersive experience’ using both traditional curatorial skills and contemporary virtual-reality based technologies. The monument is planned as an equestrian sculpture of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the total height of which shall be 210meters from AMSL. This inclThe pedestal would accommodate a series of elevators to approach the base of the statue.

The proposed monument is to be constructed on a rock out crop identified for the purpose by the Govt. of Maharashtra. The reef like basalt outcrop located at 18˚55’33’’N and 72˚47’25’’E is situated at the intersection of the Back Bay and the Arabian Sea. Usually submerged at high tide the rock emerges at low tide. The minimum viewing distance of 1.5 km would be from Raj Bhawan on Malabar Hill. The viewing distance to Nariman Point is about 3.2 Km while the distance to Chowpatty varies from 3.4 to 3.9 km.
